About project
'The Gift from Tainan' is a series of postcards that package sightseeing for tourists to easily navigate Tainan in an efficient and fun way. This project was done as part of a week-long workshop conducted by National Cheng Kung University during Taiwan Design Week 2017.
How might we...
How might we help tourists navigate Tainan in a more efficient and fun way?
Role
'The Gift from Tainan' was designed collaboratively with 4 other designers – Chung Wei Wang, Izzie Chang, Jayne Chou and Shogo Takahashi.

I took on the role of facilitating discussions, determining design direction, and managing the overall timeline and deliverables.

Defining Smart Sightseeing

Stepping into the shoes as tourists of Tainan, we explored the city to experience firsthand the joy and pain points of sightseeing here. Besides the usual tourist woes such as lack of Wi-FI as well as language barriers, we also discovered that it was difficult to travel around Tainan by bus - Even the locals weren't sure of how to take the buses!

With these considerations in mind, we defined smart sightseeing to be sightseeing that is efficient, but fun at the same time! 'The Gift of Tainan' introduces gamification into postcards. We wanted to not only raevive this dying tradition but also to amplify the element of fun in explorations.

The Experience of Smart Sightseeing

'The Gift of Tainan' starts at a visitor center, where tourists can choose their preferred journey, based on either themes or attractions. A series of postcards will be printed based on the package selected, with each postcard reflecting a destination that the tourist will be visiting. The postcards are designed to guide the tourist to each attraction in a sequential manner, with the exact details of 'how to get there' customised from postcard to postcard.

A Souvenir of Experience

With the completion of the whole journey, the tourist can then send these postcards to their loved ones back home as a commemorative gift, capturing not just the local flavours through images on the postcards, but also the experiences and sense of achievement of the tourist from each visit.

I created this space to remember, reflect on, and to celebrate the works of my journey as a designer.
